Big Bend Community College has announced that former Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Poth has been given the nod to become the Vikings new full-time Athletic Director.

Poth held the interim title for the last 2 years and was instrumental in bringing collegiate wrestling back to the college as well as rejuvenating the Vikings Athletic Booster Club. He also helped put the athletic department on track to become self-sustaining financially. Prior to serving as Interim Athletic Director, Mark held the position of communications instructor and head men’s basketball coach for 30 years.

“While serving as Interim Athletic Director, Mark developed a financial model for managing athletics that increases Big Bend student enrollment, helps implement a sustainable operating budget for athletics, and ensures student athletes maintain high academic standards,” said Vice President of Learning and Student Success Bryce Humpherys. “He also tripled athletics fundraising over the past two years. Mark’s deep knowledge of college athletics, the NWAC, Big Bend, and his strong community connections will help him successfully lead BBCC athletics.”

Poth built a very successful basketball program earning 11 Eastern Region Titles in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) and amassing 617 career wins — the most in conference history.

Big Bend President Terry Leas noted, “Mark Poth is a winner. He has demonstrated his ability to overcome challenges, inspire superior performance from his athletes, and move his program to the highest levels of excellence. We are excited that he will bring this legacy to the permanent athletic director’s role.

“I look forward to the opportunity to strengthen and promote Big Bend Community College and the community through athletics,” Poth said. “We will continue our focus of ‘Building the Dream’ through Academics, Athletics and Service.”
