Maybe you’ve heard the ditty: baseball, hot dogs, apple pie & Chevrolet? This year’s Royal City SummerFest is out to celebrate “Stars & Stripes & Royal (K) Nights” on Friday, July 13th and Saturday, July 14th. It is only fitting to include an apple pie baking contest & apple pie eating contest for both youth & adults. (on Saturday).

Festivities will kick off on Friday night at 6 p.m. with a BBQ, Dale Roth’s Sound, Video & Light Show with some of your favorite patriotic songs, Royal’s Got Talent, & old-fashioned family games. Five RHS class reunions are expected to be in attendance at Friday night’s BBQ.

At 9:15 p.m., the third Annual 5K Glow Run begins. Courtney Andersen, the chairperson of this event, says that families often do this together, some walking, some running, even pushing strollers. “Imagine running with a lighted path, and finishing up with the culmination of a spectacular fireworks show in the country air,” says Cara Hoyt, who has chaired this event for the past six years.

SATURDAY

A free all-American breakfast is a perfect way to start out Saturday’s events and you’ll need the strength! After the Grand Parade where you should expect to see Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty, a bedlam of activity breaks out in the park. “It’s practically impossible to do it all,” says Sherrie Rodriguez, the vendor & park chair. “Schedules will be available in the information booth to plan out your day and where you want to be.”

The Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Drill & Stunt Team will do a special show at 3 p.m. in addition to the parade. “I’ve been trying to get them for a couple years,” said Leslie Fanning, “and this year it worked out. They are fun to watch!”

Kids, teens & adults will want to do the $3 armband for all-day play on the humongous Toxic Meltdown Obstacle Course, and the Toxic Drop challenge. In addition, there is a waterslide & two bouncy houses included in the all-day play. The Dash for Cash is a 12 & Under Activity where “finders’ keepers” becomes reality for $200 in coins. Another 12 & Under activity is the favorite Ping Pong Drop where every kid gets a prize, and some get really good prizes such as bicycles, dolls, swim toys, etc.

The creativity of the American spirit will be highlighted with Art in the Park. Four art activities are planned: rock painting, butter slime which are free, and two art classes supervised by Deb Polito. One is a Stars & Stripes adult finger painting experience with your hands and a palette knife. All supplies are furnished and no experience is needed. The second is for Royal Knights or Knight fans, to create camaraderie celebrating team spirit. Both these classes are limited and may be secured by going online to register at https://squareup.com/store/dp-artz

The Royal Golf Course starts their Glow Ball Tournament at 6 p.m. where they golf 9 holes in the light and 9 holes in the dark. “If you’ve never done this, it’s quite an experience,” says Shawn Vetterick, golf superintendent. Teams are limited so sign up early.

A BANDA will be culminating the weekend activities with dancing from 6:30 to 9:30 in the park.
