Three Billy Goats Gruff

A kindergarten lesson shared by teacher Candace Pitts

Background Knowledge

Read the story, The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Paul Galdone. If you don’t have the story at home your child can listen to the story on YouTube.

Retell for Understanding. One of the objectives in Kindergarten is being able to identify characters, setting, and major events in a story. Ask your child to name the characters in the story. What was the setting and can they retell the story to you or another family member?

Art

Take the fun outside in the beautiful sunshine. Using sidewalk chalk that you already have leftover from last summer, or using the recipe below, have your child create a hopscotch, play tic tac toe, create a town or life-size track/road to ride their bike on. The possibilities are endless. Getting outside is good for them and perfect family time.

Outdoor Chalk Paint Materials needed to make your own:
2 cups cornstarch / 2 cups water / food coloring multi colors / small cups/containers for separate colors / paintbrushes

In a mixing bowl, combine water and cornstarch and stir until the cornstarch dissolves and is smooth. Divide into cups, use food coloring to make as many different colors of paint as you’d like. Use a paintbrush to paint your designs on the sidewalk. Washes up easily.

Numeracy Board Game

Numeracy skills in Kindergarten involve understanding numbers, counting, solving number problems, measuring, sorting, patterns adding/subtracting and more.

Playing a board game, players roll dice or spin a spinner, and move their game tokens around a board. When children play a number-based board game, something exciting happens! They begin to learn mathematical concepts.

Play a board game that has dice or a spinner and allows your child to move an object from space to space. Encourage your child to count the spaces out loud, subitize the number on the dice (look without counting each dot) and practice taking turns.

STEM LEGO BRIDGE

Materials Needed:
paper / pencil / ruler / Legos

Objective: You will become an Engineer for this project. Make a bridge using Legos that has ONLY two supports.
Problem: The Grumpy Troll is so tired of the goats bothering him by trampling over that old noisy bridge that he needs your help to build a new bridge for the 3 Billy Goats Gruff. Using Legos build a bridge that has ONLY two supports that are at least 3 inches from the ground. Your Bridge needs to be 1 ft long. (12 inches)

You may want to draw out your design (blueprint – just like a real architect would) and plan out what you want to create.

Post your bridges. I can’t wait to see what you can create! ~ Teacher Candace Pitts

PARENTS...we encourage you to take a photo of your child's creation and share with others. Your photo (and your child's first name only) will be posted at the bottom of the story for the world to see!
