Willkommen to Odessa Deutschesfest

A three-day celebration of German-Russian heritage

Travel & Leisure Posted on Sep 12, 2018
Odessa's celebration of its German-Russian heritage has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious community festivals in the region. Sponsored by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, the festival is a three-day extravaganza of entertainment, food, sports, music, and dancing in the streets! The whole town takes part in celebrating and you are invited.

Odessa, a vibrant community of approximately 1000 residents, is located within the geographically unique area known as the Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington. Visitors and residents enjoy a safe, warm, and friendly atmosphere in close proximity to outdoor recreational areas and reasonable traveling distance to urban amenities. We are a community where integrity, security, and community are the rule, rather than the exception.

On the weekend of Deutschesfest, this small community of 1000 hosts thousands of visitors all wanting to experience the very awesomeness of the lifestyle and heart of the people who call Odessa home. With over 15,000 visitors annually, there are plenty of attractions for all ages—authentic German food, city-block big Biergarten, live music, a parade, kids zone, street vendors, helicopter rides—just to name a few.

Deutschesfest is put on by local descendants of the German-Russians who settled in Odessa at the beginning of the 20th Century. A strong appreciation of good food, drink, music and dancing have been handed down through generations to give this festival a touch of care you’ll only find from those with true hometown pride. This gives you the perfect reason to get the family together, break out your lederhosen and dirndls and load up the motorhome or trailer to bring everyone out for a weekend of fun.

Here is some things you can look forward to:

Authentic German cuisine. A wide variety of locally made delicacies are offered. You'll find Bratwurst, Krautranza, Apple Strudel, Reubens, Cabbage Rolls, Kartoffel Klasse, and Kuchen, amid many other tasty treats.
Cold German bier. You can sip on a wide selection provided by locally owned and operated, Rocky Coulee Brewing Company. Fireweed, Dunkle...they're all here!

Described by many to resemble Oktoberfest in Germany, our city-block-big Biergarten will knock your lederhosen socks off! Entry—$5/day cover 21 and older | $3/day 13 to 20 | free 12 and under. Bier—Our locally made bier is on tap all weekend! Rocky Coulee Brewing Co. provides a wide selection of delicious German brews. We also provide some of your domestic go-to favorites on tap. For those who aren't into hops, personal-size wine bottles are available as well. Food—All of our home-made German food is sure to keep the belly happy. You'll find locally made Bratwurst, by Voise Sausage, accompanied by home-made sauerkraut and pickles. Don't forget to pick up a soft-pretzel to polish it all off. Music—You'll be dancing, eating, or drinking to live music all day and night! Our local and ever-popular Oom Pas and Mas german band will have you Chicken Dancing before you know it. Other favorites keep you rockin' to rock classics throughout the evening. Check out the updated lineup at the Biergarten. HAPPY HOUR—Friday, September 15th, No cover charge from 6-7pm at the Biergarten!

Watch, or be a part of our parade! The parade is on Saturday morning at 10 am.

With 15,000 visitors annually, our street fair is a great way to buy or sell. Shoppers will typically find clothes, toys, soaps, woodwork and so much more! It is put on by Odessa's local chapter of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America).

Join us as we launch Deutschesfest with a little fun and games. Thursday evening at 6 pm you will find the main stretch of Odessa closed down for our annual Kiddie Tricycle race, followed by Bed Races!

If you feel like burning off some brats or bier, then join us for the annual Fun Run. The 5K and 10K runs start on Saturday at 8:30 AM at the public park.

If you're looking for a place for the kids to unwind, then our Kids Zone and Youth Garten are the places to be. From Bubble-Ball to Laser Tag, it'll all be here!

Is there a fee for visiting the festivities?
There is no fee for visiting Deutschesfest in general. There is a fee for parking RV's and for entrance into the Bier Garten.

Where do I park?
There is plenty of parking on residential streets adjacent to downtown for automobiles. For RV's, there is the tourist park just east of downtown, and its adjacent streets. All parking areas are first come; first serve, with no hookups. Also available for RV's and tent campers, is the school's Finney Field complex, parking on a lush green ball field!

Where do I stay, are there motels, camping etc?
Odessa has one motel, the La Collage Inn (509) 982-2412. It is most likely booked a year in advance, along with Odessa Golf Club and RV Park (509) 982-0093. Odessa's Reiman and tourist park fill up with RV's a week before Deutschesfest. There is no 'reservation' system in place for camping or RV's in the park. The Odessa School District allows RV parking and tent camping at its Finney Field sports complex. The location is on West 4th Avenue, across from the museum. Just look for the signs once you enter town.

What does it cost to park at the ballfield campsite, and can I reserve a camping spot?
There is no 'reservation' system in place, it is first come, first serve. It is common practice for early arrivals to 'stake out' space for friends arriving later. No one has ever been turned away due to lack of space. The cost is $30 if arriving Wednesday or Thursday. $25 if arriving Friday and beyond. Note that on Wednesday, you cannot park till after 5:30pm. There is no water or electricity available on site. There is a 'rudimentary' wastewater dump across from the cemetery on the west end of town.
